Innovative technological advances are increasingly changing and improving various aspects of our daily lives. Now, through artificial intelligence (AI), medical researchers have found that technology may be able to save thousands – or even millions – of lives each year.
A recent study has used machine-learning algorithms to predict heart attacks, based on UK-based data from 2005. It used this data to predict which patients in the sample would have their first cardiovascular event over the next 10 years. They checked the accuracy against the 2015 records and the AI methods outperformed traditional methods by 7.6%.
This is significant because prediction often leads to prevention. Additionally, machine-learning applications will continue to improve as they have more data – leading to even bigger gains.
With such a high proportion of the global population at risk of dying from the effects of cardiovascular disease, combining the worlds of health and technology is the way forward.
